Elizabeth Sandvig

My subject matter is stimulated by what I experience. I have spent years painting birds and the electronic sonogram of their song. I started out when I was a painter in Mexico painting animals and people in the landscape. Sometimes I put people in my paintings: Performing women in the circus, spinning in hoops, fire and floods, as well as the peaceable kingdom. I spent many summers as a child in the company of horses, cats, mice and birds always pinning after a dog until I got one. I went to London to see an actual camel. But I have been interested in painting wart hogs, goats and sheep. Insects and butterflies are always metaphors for spring and the incredible diversity of our planet. I am not satisfied by being a visual tourist but need to make nature part of me by drawing, painting, printing or sculpting. I like a great variety of art, abstract or representational, suggestive but not too descriptive. The bird prints often show the rendition of the sound from an electronic recording that each bird makes when it sings which I translate into a hand made art and I enjoy experimenting with many media. But I always return to the monotype as the simplest and most direct method of conveying a thought.
